Ronald O. Gilcher, MD Award
ADRP established this award in 2004 in honor of Ron Gilcher, a visionary blood banker created and championed numerous important safety, technology and recruitment initiatives. As President, CEO, and Chief Medical Officer of the Oklahoma Blood Institute, he directed and inspired phenomenal collections growth, increasing from 22,000 units in 1979 to more than 200,000 by 2006 (when he transitioned to his current role as Medical Director Emeritus for OBI).
Leading the way in blood center based public health programs, Dr. Gilcher pioneered cholesterol, prostate specific antigen (PSA), and cardiac disease marker testing for U.S. donors. Similarly, for recipient safety, he was first to institute the HIV antigen test and single donor nucleic acid testing (NAT). A true friend to donor recruiters, Dr. Gilcher has supported the ADRP since its beginnings. He has spoken and published widely on recruitment topics; he has constantly advocated with blood industry leaders and government regulators for better recruitment policies and resources; and he was instrumental in ushering in double red cell technology to boost blood availability. As a "lead dog" in our profession, he uses his unobstructed view of our profession to set a winning direction for us all.

Ron Franzmeier Lifetime Achievement Award
ADRP established this award in 1991 to honor Ron Franzmeier, former Vice President of The Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin. At the age of 46, Ron died on January 20, 1991, suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart arrhythmia caused by sarcoidosis, which had unknowingly invaded his system.
Ron was deeply committed to his community and to the concept of giving of oneself to help others develop. His one-to-one approach to employee development led to the emergence of many people who became national leaders in blood banking.
One of Ron's favorite phrases, borrowed from his mentor, Elmer Winter of Manpower, Inc., was "Organizations don't grow." The people within them grow...and the people keep pulling the organizations up with them." Ron's style of management and his approach to voluntarism both clearly reflected that belief, as he devoted his energies and time to skillfully opening doors and offering others the opportunity to step through to their own future.
