IP Targeted Advertising to Recruit Blood Donors OnlineFOLLOWING
Jennifer Wilson
National Donor Publicity Manager
Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service
In the past 10 years, the media landscape has become increasingly fragmented, with the adoption of digital media, digital television and the expansion of internet use. Traditional media (local radio, press, television) can no longer be relied upon in isolation to target all adults in Scotland. Nearly 25 percent of all advertising revenue in Scotland is spent online with the remaining share of revenues split between traditional advertising avenues. Scottish Blood Transfusion Service will share how it has developed and implemented an IP targeted nu-media campaign.
The Highs and Lows of Social Media
Asuka Burge
Marketing Services Manager
New Zealand Blood Service
If your organization has ventured into the social media world with a Facebook page, has it prepared itself for the possibility of a negative incident? Do you know what you would do if that happened? What about in the event of a national emergency like an Earthquake? What would you do?
The New Zealand Blood Service launched its Facebook page in August 2009, and while it provides a rewarding communication avenue to donors day to day it has been a steep learning curve on what damage just one individual can do in this social media sphere, while also highlighting it’s benefits during a national emergency . This presentation will address what you need to be aware of when setting up a Facebook page and how a negative incident can be managed to ensure the integrity of the organization is not adversely affected. It will also focus on the positives on how Facebook can aid a blood service to communicate with the public, provide quality customer service and improve awareness.

Do you work with high school and college sponsors? Consider this question—is it easier to raise a high school sponsor’s goal by 30 units or secure a new 30-unit sponsor? This presentation will help recruiters recognize additional potential at their high school and college blood drives and learn how to capitalize on that potential. This can be accomplished by emphasizing focus on relationship building with the students, the power of competition, targeted and specific saturation rates assigned to each school, the advantages of multiple-day operations, summer/winter drives and the effective use of automated collections at high school and college drives, and the engagement of LGBTQ groups on campus to your advantage. This approach resulted in significant growth of this center’s blood drives.

Ivor Hobbs
Marketing Consultant
South African National Blood Service
During school presentations, South African National Blood Service recruiters combine education and entertainment. After explaining the importance of blood donation and the criteria of donation, there is a rendition of blood donation themed impersonations of various personalities and characters. By encouraging children to laugh and place blood donation in a very positive light, a form of peer pressure is created where those who donate blood are regarded as the “In” crowd and those who don’t are the “Out” crowd. Most importantly, by making the kids laugh a lasting impression and a talking point is created. A talking point leads to be the best form of marketing, “Word of mouth.” Attend this webinar to:
- Increase collections through schools.
- Strengthen relationships with schools.
- Leave a lasting impression that can pave the way for a constant supply of regular, safe, young and young-at-heart donors.
During the session, the speaker will share how the participating blood centers can improve their social media dialogue to ensure they are not just broadcasting a message, but also engaging their community in blood donation.
