President Richard Nixon proclaimed January 1970 as the first National Blood Donor Month on December 31, 1969, as requested by Senate Joint Resolution 154, to pay tribute to voluntary blood donors and encourage new donors to join.

In addition, the Blood Diseases and Disorders Education Program, a program of the National Institutes of Health, has several resources available to highlight the importance of blood donation. This includes fact sheets, drop-in articles available in English and Spanish, and social media resources.
